印第安纳大学伯明顿分校建校于公元1820年，是印第安纳大学系统〈Indiana University System〉中最早成立的学校，也是印第安纳大学系统中最有名气的分校。印第安纳大学系统属于州立大学;该系统除了伯明顿校区以外，还有其它7个不同的分校，分散在印第安纳的大小不同城市之中。
