Whatever the answer, technology is already changing the process of media production, broadcast and consumption in countless ways. Producers are experimenting with multiple story lines that allow viewers to select their own endings. Computerized special effects are further blurring the lines between movies and videogames. Commercials are becoming interactive stories. While there will be casualties in this chaos, it's unlikely that any form of entertainment will die out completely. "When TV came along, radio became audio wallpaper, and movies, which had been the ubiquitous media, became the special event," notes futurist Paul Saffo. Even as DVDs have put cinematic revenues into free fall, theaters are already reinventing themselves as destination attractions with gourmet menus and child care.
As the BBC rolls out its fall lineup, Jana Bennett has asked other division heads to participate in a time-capsule exercise, placing their bets for the future of digital entertainment. "Nobody could have predicted the mobile revolution 10 years ago," she says. "I think it will be interesting in a few years to see how wrong we all are about this." Whatever they are watching, on whichever device, it's safe to say that the consumers of tomorrow's entertainment will be doing their own thing.
