MOSCOW is the capital of Russia and the country’s principalp Olitical，economic，financial，educational，and transportationcenter,located on the MoskvaRiver．The city’s population of1O．4 million permanentinhabitants within the city boundaries constitutes about 7％of the total Russian population．It is the most populous city in Europe．The city is in the Central FederalDistrictlocated in the western pan of the Russian FederatiOn． Historically， itsposition was central in the Russian home land．It was the capital of the former Soviet Union． andf Muscovite RUSSia．the pre-Imperial Russian state．It is thesite of the famous Kremlin．which now serves as theceremonial residence of the President．
Moscow's architectural and perfor ming arts culture areworld．renowned．Moscow is alsowell known as the site of the Saint Basil’s Cathedral．with its elegant onion domes，as well as the Cathedral of Christ the Savior The Patriarch of Moscow,whose residence is the Danilov Monastery,serves as the head ofthe Russian Orthodox Church．Moscow also remains a major economiccenter and is home to a large number of billionaires and is perennially consideredone of me most expensive cities in theworld．It is home to many scientific andeducational institutions．as well asnumerous sport facilities．It possesses acomplex transport system that includes theworld's busiest metro svstem which isfamous for its architecture．Moscow als Obecame the host of the 1980 Summer olympics．Moscow has a populatiOn of around 11million．and covers an area of around1080 km2．

Moscow is located on the Moskva River．which bends its way through the sout her nand western parts of the city．Most of themain sites are on the northern bank of therivet．The other major waterway is the Yauza River.which flows into the Moskvaeast of the Kremlin．
Much of Moscow's geography is definedby the numerous Ring Roads’that circlethe city at various distances from thecenter.With Red Square and the Kremlinforming the very center，the innermostring road is the Boulevard Ring，whichruns from the Christ the Saviour Cathedralin south-west central Moscow、to themouth of the Yauza in South-east centralMoscow．
The next ring road is the Garden Ring，which used to be the place of Moscow'souter walls．It derives its name from the fact that landowners near the road in Tsarist times were attractive．In Soviettimes the road was widened and was meant to be a place where planes could land during WWII．
The recently constructed Third Ring is not much use for tOurists but is a heavily use dmotorway which absorbs a bit of Moscow's traffic．The outer edge of Moscow is largely defined by the Moscow Ring Road，a motorway which encircles
