      For more than nine decades, West Coast University, white open to all qualified applicants, has particularly sought to provide effective educational programs primarily directed to fully employed, highly motivated men and women who have the sincere desire to increase their job security, to improve their career prospects, and to accelerate their personal development through a program of evening education. Responsive to the internationalization of the area, the University over the past few years has increased its efforts to recognize a broader constituency and encourages the enrollment of international students whose experience or career goals match those of its domestic student population.

      Guided by this purpose, the University has defined academic and professional goals in the fields of management. computer science and engineering on both the graduate and undergraduate levels. These goals emphasize: the development of insight in and understanding of the fundamental ideas and methods of mathematics, business, engineering, the humanities, and the physical and social sciences; the development of scientific application of this knowledge to innovative solution of real-world problems; and the development of skills in effective communication, documentation and productive collaboration.

        In working toward these goals. West Coast University has developed comprehensive and highly concentrated graduate and undergraduate curricula. An outstanding faculty of practicing professionals - managers. scientists and engineers from industry, business and government who also have extensive teaching experience — successfully relate the theory of the classroom to the context of the ‘real’ world. The degree programs are highly accelerated and rely on a carefully matched schedule of courses in a format of evening, weekend and online classes. In addition, West Coast University has been able to maintain tuition rates which are at least comparable with other accredited, independent institutions offering similar educational programs.


         Thousands of working adults throughout Southern California have successfully completed degree programs at West Coast University, and have benefited through increased insight, understanding and skill. In all, more than 30,000 students, including employees of over 1,000 companies and public agencies, transfer students from some 500 colleges and universities throughout the United States, and students from nearly 40 foreign nations, have attended evening classes at West Coast University. Many of these students and graduates have contributed substantially to the social, economic and technological development of the communities in which they live and work. They have become effective leaders in business. industry, commerce and government.

学校历史

     西海岸大学是加利福尼亚州立法律下于1909年特许设立的非赢利性质的教育机构。在其早期，学校专门研究医学和法学。西海岸大学首次涉足于工程学、文理科学和管理学是在1938年，那时正值一个速成项目，使得学校引入了航空工程学的理科学士学位。这些项目由于美国加入二战而发生了某些变化，但在整个1946年间仍持续进行着。

          1947年，在哲学博士维克多. 厄尔康宁的领导和指引下，一个拓展项目发展起来了，它在专业上 增设了电子与机械工程学、数学以及物理学。维克多对一系列工程学的复苏起了重要作用，二战之前，工程学已成为全天候的项目。

      厄尔康宁教授逐渐认识到一组重要人群，他们想却又不能获得学位，因为他们白天各有安排。这类人——成熟又颇具经验的行业者——具有动力但更需要获取机会来追求他们的学业以及获得学位。 
      有了这层想法，学校开创了一个集中而又系统的项目，它仍旧在数学和物理科学上提供完善的背景知识——更提供专门的夜间和周末课程安排。这种课程于1953年在工程学概论上开始实施。借助于现代化的信息科技，我们于上世纪末期将这种模式通过联机教育和远程辅助教育拓展到管理学、医学和法学等多个专业门类，并为国际学生提供卓有成效的高等教育机会。 
 
校园的扩大及发展

     奥兰城地区技术领域的快速发展使西海岸大学于1963年在奥兰城开办了另一所教学中心。在此居住和/或工作的学生能继续在大学的奥兰郡教育中心完成夜校课程。

          1972年，西海岸大学永久迁入了洛杉基Shatto Place，教学大楼结构是专门设计的，包括行政办公室、教室和实验室。为了纪念已故前大学校长维克多. 厄尔康宁教授和他已故妻子，前招生部负责人艾玛. 厄尔康宁，总部设施及教学中心于1981年被正式指定为厄尔康宁中心。 
          1973年，为了方便南加州各公司，学校开始开展“栽培”课程，当然参加课程的学生也并非只限于公司职员。

     圣地亚哥地区栽培项目的成功使学校在1977年建立了首个校外公共教学项目。圣地亚哥郡中心于1981年在斯克里普斯农场区建立，最初开设的是计算机科学项目课程，并根据当地社会需求引入了其他课程。 
      同样，为了满足军用、民用和商用的需求，大学在范登堡空军基地开展项目。位于Lompoc的圣诞芭芭拉郡中心于1983年正式成立，也正是大学迁入现在的地址时。
            西海岸大学在其三个学院开展教学指导——文理学院、商业与管理学院以及工程学院。
 
学科间学位项目

     具有不寻常教育背景的研究生，依据专业经验或兴趣，可选择跨学科的学位项目，结合初级课程和专业化领域内的不同课程而制定特别的教学计划。
 
专门学习项目

     不追求学位的学生们可最大限度地参加三门卓有成效的实务课程的学习，而不需要加入本科生或研究生的行列。专门学习项目的实用性相关信息、入学条件及步骤、转帐问题等均可在招生处咨询和办理。
         在分级标准、成绩单、毕业证书、档案记录、学费和遵守学校规章制度上，专门学习项目的学生与报考学位的学生没有什么差别。
 
专门课程
          专门课程需要大学在非常规环境下开设，以满足学生在传统课程中不能满足的需求。经由学生递交请愿书的预先批准必须在他参加专门计划和专门课题课程之前，从所在院校的院长处获得。为学生开设的专门课题课程与各个环境下安排的常规课程搭配进行：
 
·一个研究生课程修本科生的学分
 
·一个高阶段本科生课程修研究生学分
 
·一个常规安排的课程被适当的补充课所取代，因为另一门课程并未出现在课表上。
 
    专门计划课程包括在个人的基础上与教师密切合作研究，要么代替现有课程向学生开放，要么通过个人学习计划的发展向学生开放。

    对于专门计划课程，由院长挑选的教师负责课程进度以及递交教案。这些教案是基于教学大纲和列有请愿书的学习目标所写的。教案通过后，课程便开始进行了。学生可以领到教案的拷贝，并根据其指定的目标来评估其好坏。

    专门课题和专门计划课程不需被院长予以特别批准，除非学习活动或其安排不允许学生参加常规课程学习。

     专门课题和专门计划课程被指定为199, 299, 399, 499, 599和699（以评分等级决定），或者按标题指定为“专门课题”、“专门计划”或“指导性学习”。
 
校园外项目
         除常规授课外，学校为南加州几家大型公司挑选了合适的地点采用“栽培”授课方式实施教学。这些课程并不局限于公司职员。所有的“校园外”课程都由大学教师教授，并且与中心授课点相应的课程没什么区别。
 
学习完成时间

     西海岸大学要求，要获得学士学位至少要上完124学习单元的课程。传统意义上来讲，完成这些学时要花五年的时间，而且只是一周三晚的出勤率。实际的学时要求依据课程而不同（各项目有确切的学时安排）。

     硕士学位的每专业研究生课程至少需要30个学习单元，大约是12-18个月（工商管理硕士学位需要完成36到69个学习单元的学习，大约是12-24个月）。

     博士学位的每专业研究生课程需要完成30-90个学习单元，大约是12-36个月。

对本科生和研究生来说，完成学习的时间会受到学院转学学分的影响而缩短，因为他们在其他公认院校能很好地完成相关学习。

West Coast University is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges， and Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS). in addition, the University's undergraduate degree options in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering at the Elconin and Orange County Centers have been accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).
 
The University is a member of the Western College Association, the Association of Independent California Colleges and Universities, the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, the American Society for Engineering Education, the American Council on Education. the institute of International Education, the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers, and the National Association for Foreign Student Affairs.
 
West Coast University is approved for education and instruction by the Superintendent of Public Instruction, State of California, is approved for Veteran's Educational Benefits and is authorized under federal Law to enroll nonimmigrant alien students.

DOCTOR OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION - DBA
 
The overall goal of this DBA is to develop practicing managers and business professionals as both thinkers and doers and equip them with the capability to make a leadership contribution to their own organizations and the wider global industries and communities in which they are involved.
 
As distinct from PhD research that focuses mainly on contributions to theoretical knowledge, the research emphasis of this DBA is on making a contribution to professional practice and/or policy.
 
Candidates are assessed by research papers (100%).
 
The entire PhD/DBA program can be completed at respective local learning centers.
 
DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY - PHD
 
Doctoral Degree is only offered to matured candidates holding master degree and with sufficient exposure to teaching, practice and research and be able to conduct their own research to complete and submit their thesis to the international examination committee of WCU through affiliated Centers in their respective country.
